We all know that Botox is commonly used as an anti-aging treatment and for looking good, but doctors and researchers are discovering the treatment may help with depression and improving one’s mood and disposition. In a recent study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice, injecting the neurotoxin botulinum toxin (Botox) into a section of the forehead between the eyebrows and above the nose significantly improved depression scores by at least 27% for a group of men and women. Nearly all the patients saw some improvement. The area between the eyebrows is where frown lines appear.
The recent findings indicate that facial expressions are part of the circuit of the brain related to one’s frame of mind, thus improving feelings of depression. Anxiety, anger, and sadness all travel through a muscle called the frontalis. Botox inhibits this muscle and calms it, so it becomes more difficult to feel those negative emotions. Researchers are also testing to see if Botox is effective for treating bipolar disorder and social anxiety.
If proven effective, Botox would be a unique entry into the world of antidepressants. Depression is a common condition particularly among women, who are about twice as likely as men to suffer from the disorder. Approximately 12 million American women experience clinical depression every year.
